When I accidentally broke an antique glassware, I felt miserable but I learned a lesson; don’t ever hurry when packing fragile items. Since then, I have always hired Domestic Removals that is St Albans because they took care of the packaging very professionally and I never had a problem.

But if you are planning to move on your own, then here are some easy tips to keep your items safe and secure from being broken:

What to Do First?

  1. Prepare in Advance. Because if you hurry, there is almost a 73% chance you will break stuff unless you are very good at packing which you probably aren’t. Take time to pack your fragile stuff properly, even a day before moving in.
  2. You will have to buy proper tools to pack your stuff in. You will need some quality boxes in different sizes, packing paper is recommended, bubble wrap is a must, pliable cardboard is obligatory, scissors and packing tape is compulsory. Most of the Man and Van services in St Albans have these tools with them or more professional ones to ensure proper safety.

How to pack?

  • Plates – These should be bubble wrapped one by one, secured by packing tape and should be placed vertically in small or medium boxes with packing paper being on bottom and top. Don’t try to over pack the box, use more if necessary.
  • Glasses – These should be wrapped with the packing paper and crumple some paper to place it into the empty space of the glasses. Line them in a small or medium box with packing paper placed on top and bottom. Layering spaces around glasses and packing them with paper is also recommended.
  • Lamps – These should be boxed with the flat side at the bottom with a lot of paper used to cover up the space in box. Bubble wrap can also be used if you find it appropriate.
  • Pictures – Pictures or frames that hold picture should be lined in a standing position in a small to medium sized box, with crumpled paper in between the frames. Pictures should be wrapped with packing paper.
  • Specialty Items – If you have something very antique and special, here comes the use of pliable cardboard. You should wrap your item with bubble wrap and then secure it with tape. Use a pliable cardboard box to secure the item in it and but another one on it to secure it further. Use tape to properly close the cardboard and label it as fragile.

You can put a FRAGILE label on every item that should be handled with care so when the moving company comes in, they will be careful with that box. I hope you will have a happy moving!
